Announcing My NaNoWriMo 2022 Novel: The Mystery of the Body Thief

During this year's NaNoWriMo I am working on the 3rd draft of The Mystery of the Body Thief. So, here is some information about my project and my plans ahead for the 3rd draft (and other drafts) in general.

As a quick update, I'd like you to know that I've updated two pages. I've added a new character for Dolls of Wax, Eyes of Glass which you can see here. And, I've updated the page for the characters from The Princess Arisias mystery series here

                                                                        Synopsis-

Genre: Fantasy | Murder Mystery Series: First book in the Princess Arisias mystery series

Horatio wakes up from being in a coma, but he doesn't remember anything that happened before he fell into unconsciousness. All that he remembers is a name, "Arisias!"

Also... Detective Inspector Time finds himself having to solve a case without Princess Arisias. Murders have been happening throughout many different kingdoms, and no one knows who exactly is behind it all.

                                             Characters-

A lot of things have changed about the characters since I last made a post about them, including some of their names, so here are the characters:
                                                  Horatio-

Horatio is a servant who works in the castle, and who has amnesia.
He is still discovering who he is, and wants to know more,
for he feels very lost and confused.

                                        Princess Arisias-

Arisias is a princess, who never woke up from her coma, unlike Horatio.
Before the coma she worked as a detective part time, while also fulfilling her role as a princess.

                                                                   Ophelia-
Ophelia is a healer and a priestess (to the goddess of the earth and the god of air).
She is a quiet, but very kind person. Though she doesn't talk a lot, when she does she always has something thoughtful to say.

                                       D.I. Elyerin Time

He is called "Elyerin" by those who know him well, and "Detective Inspector Time" when he is working. He is an elvish detective with time related powers from the god of time. D.I. Elyerin Time is currently working on solving the case of murdered royalty.

Cerawen & Vonivera

Cerawen and Vonivera are Arisias's ladies-in-waiting.

Cerawen- is from another kingdom and was sent over to Dragons' Province for undisclosed reasons.

Vonivera- is a fay, who used to be close to Arisias before the accident.

Marigold-

Marigold works for the civil guard and is training to be a detective. She has not gotten there, but she is working towards it. She hopes one day to be a detective like her father.

My Plans for this NaNoWriMo-

I decided to take a long break before working on the third draft. When I finished the second draft, I took some time for reading to get into the mode of writing the third draft. One book I found particularly helpful was Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. I usually don't find self-help writing books useful, but this was really inspirational for me.

In fact one piece of advice King gave was to embellish references/imaginary. King referred to his book Carrie, where he used blood related imagery, which he embellished more in later drafts.
This made me think about the imaginary/references in my own work, that I plan to embellish more this time through.

Since I wrote my post about finishing the second draft, I've come up with fantastical names for the characters: Cerawen, Vonivera, etc..  At this point only one character still needs a fantasy name, and that is Marigold. She has two names, an elvish name and a human name. Marigold is the name she goes by as a human, but since she lives among elves and was raised by an elf, she also needs an elvish name.

I'm also rereading  Lord of the Rings for inspiration, and I'm thinking about ways to describe my elves without immediately saying that their ears are pointed. They are pointed, but I don't want to just rely on that imagery to define them as elves. I need to capture that something which makes my elves different than humans, and I want to show that without directly saying that they are elves all the time to my readers. This is something that will take several drafts to figure out how to do, but it is something I've been thinking a lot about recently.

My fantasy world has been built much more, since I last wrote about it.
I'm actually working on a side project, a collection of myths involving the myths of the gods and goddesses of that world.  I realized the stories and the myths are very important to that world. And while I have talked about the myths in blog posts, I want to steadily build a collection of short stories. I should add, I was partially inspired by Bardugo's Lives of Saints, for the Grishaverse series. While hers is much shorter than this is going to be, it definitely served as an inspiration.

I've found that it helps to understand the world, because the world will effect the characters' actions in ways, whether unconsciously or not.

So, those are my plans for this NaNoWriMo. I hope NaNoWriMo is going well for everyone else!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Are you doing NaNoWriMo this November? If so, what are you working on? If not, have you re-read any favorite books of yours recently?

My Art From Inktober 2021 (Part Three)

Click here to read part one and part two

This is sadly my last Inktober post for 2021, but, I will be doing it again next year, so stay tuned.

Once again, here is the prompt list for Inktober 2021:

And here are the rest of my drawings:

Day #21 Fuzzy- I interpreted this as having a fuzzy memory. So I drew my character, Horatio, from The Mystery of the Body Thief. Horatio has amnesia, so, I decided to go a little abstract with the design of his fuzzy memories.

Day #22 Open- I interpreted this as being open to the spirit world. I decided to draw Matilda Moore from Dolls of Wax, Eyes of Glass with a silhouette of ghosts behind her.

Day #23 Leak- I interpreted this as having magic leak out of a magic lamp.

Day #24 Extinct- I decided to draw a dinosaur. It was very fun to draw.

Day #25 Splat- I decided basically to draw a drawing of an abstract painting.

#26 Connect- The movie The Mitchells Vs. The Machines was originally called Connect. So I decided to draw the dog from the movie (part of the drawing references a joke that shows up in the movie).

#27 Spark- A drawing of my character, Riona "Fire," she was the first character that came to mind when I thought about the word "Spark." She can turn back and forth from being a human and a phoenix, so I thought the prompt would fit her.

#28 Crispy- At first I didn't know what to draw for this prompt, so I looked up the definition of Crispy and one of the descriptions of the word was about bacon. So I decided to draw that.

#29 Patch- I decided to draw a rag doll.
I think this doll belongs to one of my characters, but I'm not sure which one.
So, because of that I'd love to hear your suggestions about which character should own this doll in the comments down below. 😉

#30 Slither-  A drawing of the Norse god, Loki, and the world serpent.

#31 Risk- This is a drawing of the final chase scene between the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. In this drawing Ichabod is going to be taking the risk of crossing the bridge to get away from the horseman.

Using Polls to Create Art #5

                                                    Previous parts: #1#2#3, and #4

Greetings Adventurers!
Here are some more drawings I made using polls, I had a lot of fun drawing these, unless otherwise stated the drawings in this post came out of majority votes:

I wanted to draw Marigold because I don't have many drawings of her, so I did a poll. And Marigold with a dragon ended up winning the majority vote. This is my favorite drawing of her, because I feel it really captures her personality.

Felix pictured at a masquerade. I had a lot of fun making his mask, because I wanted it to hint at something that happened to him in his story. It was also fun to draw Felix in clothes other than his black suit.

Vallara, a character from the same world as Annabelle (but in a very different part of it) at an archery contest. The last time I drew her was in this post, I felt it was about time to redraw characters from that post, but I was unsure which one so I had the voters vote on who I should redraw and Vallara ended up winning.

Matilda with a ghost (girl). I feel the voters were a lot more nicer to Felix than they were to Matilda, but I know she would enjoy meeting a ghost, so I doubt she would complain. 😊

A drawing of Ophelia and Horatio. I decided to do a drawing inspired by Howl's Moving Castle, and had the pollers vote on which two characters would take the places of Howl and Sophie, Horatio and Ophelia ended up winning.

This wasn't a majority vote, someone had an idea of a crossover, and thought it would be fun if I drew the scene from Howl's Moving Castle but with Ophelia and Gletta. Though Gletta and Ophelia live in completely different worlds, the idea of them ever meeting each other seemed fun to me, so I had to draw it.

My idea for what happened and how they met was that Ophelia used her magic (given to her by gods) to rescue Gletta from being nearly killed in a battle. Gletta is just a bit upset that she was pulled out of the battle when she thought she was going to defeat whoever was trying to kill her. (Hence the reason she is so annoyed at Ophelia).

I also find it interesting that Ophelia takes the place of Howl in both drawings. She isn't like him in terms of personality, but in abilities she is. After all Howl is a wizard and Ophelia has magic, and could be considered a sorceress. (The only thing she doesn't have is a moving castle. 😉)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Which drawing is your favorite? And which would you rather meet a ghost or a dragon?

Announcing My July 2021 Project: The Mystery of the Body Thief

A while ago I mentioned that I finished writing the first draft of this novel. This July, I am focusing on editing it and working on the second draft, along with some world-building along the way.

For this project I started writing the first draft in 2018 and finished it in 2020.  I made a lot of posts about this novel in the past, so if you want to check them out, here you can, or if you can to look at posts about the series as a whole here you can.

Synopsis-

Genre: Fantasy | Murder Mystery

Horatio wakes up from being in a coma, but he doesn't remember anything that happened before he fell into unconsciousness. All that he remembers is a name, "Annabelle!"

Also... Detective Inspector Time finds himself having to solve a case without Lady Annabelle.
Murders have been happening throughout many different kingdoms, and no one knows who exactly is behind it all.

Characters-

Here are the characters. Please note, many things have changed. Phillip, the dwarf guard character  from the first draft moved to later book, given that the time-line changed a lot. (The dwarf and elf war happens much later). Also since Phillip is not coming in until later, I replaced him for now with a character named Angela. I had created her character for All is Not Lost For All Will Begin Again, but that setting and story changed, too. Angela didn't fit the story anymore, so I moved her to The Mystery of the Body Thief instead.

There are other characters who appear later in the story, but I won't be including them in this post. In this post, I am including the characters who have the largest impact on the plot:

                                                         Horatio

A servant who works in the castle, who lost his memory. He has a connection to Annabelle, but what the connection is, he doesn't know, but he longs to find out.

                                                     Ophelia

She is one of  Horatio's few friends and one of the healers at the castle. She works with the Earth and Air Gods and learns her magic from them. She is a very sweet (but quiet) person.

                                                    Lady Annabelle

Lady Annabelle is a princess, who is in a coma, who fell unconscious at the same time as Horatio. Before she was in a coma, she worked as a detective and sometimes would work with D.I. Time and Marigold.

                                                Detective Inspector Time

An old friend of Annabelle's, he is a detective actively working on the case of the murdered royals.

                                                    Marigold Time

Marigold is also working on the case of the murders of royalty, and is the adoptive daughter of D.I. Time. She also works as a detective in the police department.

                                                           Vonivera

Lady Annabelle's lady in waiting, she is a friend to Horatio and a frenemy of "Angie." Unlike the other ladies in the castle, Vonivera is a fairy and she finds it odd to be amongst elves and humans.

                                                          Angela "Angie"

Another one of Lady Annabelle's ladies in waiting, Angela is "a close friend" of Vonivera's (or at least that is what she tells people).

Soundtrack-

I compiled a playlist of music that I listen to while writing this story. I decided to make a different playlist for the second draft, because it is neat to look back and listen to music that I listened to when writing the first draft of this novel.

                              My Goal-

Since I'm on the second draft, my goal is going to be edit/rewrite at least 12,000 words. I made my goal smaller because, editing is really hard and I don't want to make myself stressed with a large goal. There are also a lot of things that have changed in the plot-line, so getting those changes into the story, along with the world-building is very important in this second draft. While it may not be perfect, I have the third draft to fix those flaws.

Are you participating in Camp NaNoWriMo this July? If so what are you writing?

I Finished the First Draft of The Mystery of the Body Thief!

I just finished The Mystery of the Body Thief's First Draft!!

I had four different attempts in writing this series, before I came to one that actually worked. The previous attempts were: The Case of Confusion, The Mystery of the Stolen Crown, The Race Against Time and The Mystery of the Phantom of Dragonspire Court.

When I wrote The Mystery of the Body Thief I intended it at first to be the fifth book, but because the other books didn't end up working, it ended up being the first book. The Mystery of the Body Thief had the strongest plot and a coherent one, as well.  I believe this is the first successful mystery book I have ever written. However, in the first draft I sort of forgot to world-build, because I was much more focused on the mystery. So, just like any first story, it's not perfect. It can be improved through editing, rewriting, and world-building. (Which I will talk more about later, in this post).

During this NaNoWrimo,  I made the word count goal pretty high at first because I thought it would take a while to reach the end of the story. I ended up lowering the goal a bit, because otherwise I would have been forcing the story to go on for longer than it needed to be, and at that point I may have been just pouring out unneeded words.

Now onto what the story is about:

                                               (Images from wikipedia, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Red_hair_in_art#/media/File:William_Strang_portrait_Cynthia_1917.jpg,

                               Synopsis

Genres: Fantasy | Murder Mystery with a bit of Adventure. Series: It is the first book in the Lady Annabelle Mystery Series.

Go here and here to read the two other posts I made about this novel.

                   Music for the world

You can also listen to it here

Since I made a playlist/soundtrack of music I listened to while writing my story, I thought I would post the playlist. This is where I get some of the inspiration for the world that I am at the moment working on, and that will show up in my future posts. 😉

What's Next for The Mystery of the Body Thief

I'm going to be working on the second draft, which is mainly going to be focused on world-building as the first draft was more focused on the plot, than the world itself. And because of that I intend to share some of my world-building process in a new series for this blog, A Look Into a World. It will be focusing on how the society works, the religions of the world work, and how the magic works. (Though in this world the magic and the religions are tied closely together, because the gods give people magic).

Also I gave two of my character's powers recently. I need to figure out more clearly what they actually do, and what gods they are connected to. (Basically who they'd be a devotee to). I also need to figure out Vonivera's powers, I know a little about them like she can turn invisible but I don't know much else. Vonivera was born with her powers, instead becoming a devotee to a god or goddess, while the other two characters have powers given to them from gods and goddesses. I also have a sorceresses character who I vaguely know the powers of, but I need to figure them out.

I also need to get to know the other main characters, as I seemed to be more in Annabelle's and Horatio's heads, than anyone else's. So I want to get to know them better, I already know at least one of them well at this point and that is Annabelle's father Lord Oberon. But everyone else I hope to know better through second drafting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What type of magic system(s) do you have in your Fantasy world(s)? And in First drafting did you ever forget to world-build?

My Characters make a post for my Blogiversary

Hello "blog" readers, this is Horatio and...

Phoenix and...

Lady Annabelle and...

Tess Short.

As you may have noticed, Quinley never has characters like us, make posts---

Oh, so we will have our own characters that we make up, write a "blog post" in their point of view??

That's actually not what I meant...but, as I was about to say, her dolls have posted before on her doll blog and to show we are equal to her dolls, we as main characters have decided to make one big blog post. We don't exactly know how to use a "computer"(something used by non-fictional people), so we are using a magical spell to write this, hence the reason each of us have different text colors when we speak. Also, if you are wondering why Lady Annabelle is able to talk, well, we used the spell to do that, unfortunately it doesn't work in my story--

Your story (that you're writing) has no magic in it?

No, it does. Why would you think I'm writing it? I'm the main character! Oh...never mind....

Hello again "blog" viewers. Getting to the point: we are making this post because Quinley's blog's anniversary is rolling around. We thought instead of her making a blog post for it, we, the main characters, would make the post...though I am still upset with her because my first book came to an end, and I was enjoying it so much. (Don't tell her.)

Well, you can write a new story then.

Phoenix that's not what I was talking about, never mind...

So, in the post we will talk about what the author has done to us, of course without spoiling the stories.Though that won't be too hard because we have no idea what will happen in the stories she hasn't finished. Unfortunately, the author is scary in that way.

You could just plot it, you know.

Phoenix!

What?

You sound like a writer!

I am...well, I am a poet, and do sometimes write short stories, but what?

You...you...anyway, let's get to the post.

The writer has a fellow main character offer you a chance to go on an adventure what do you do?

I actually, never had this happen to me, I was never offered go on an adventure. I was offered a chance to solve a mystery though...but that sort of just happened.

I tried to avoid it at all costs...but that sort of failed.

What?? Um...I am not sure how to answer this, first of all what do you mean by "fellow main character"? And what on earth!?

I...well, I...I think I must be dreaming, or something. But, I am not exactly sure how to answer this, I still think I'm dreaming...but an adventure sounds fun!

The writer threatens the life of your best friend, what do you do?

Yell at the author at random times, especially when they are doing random things like watching a "movie", taking a shower or bath, or trying to sleep. Once that happens, they probably won't hurt my friend.

Bother...I should have done that when she was writing the story. I probably should do that when she is writing Tess Short (Book Two), and then she wouldn't do awful things to my friends or uncle.

Uhh... I have had characters in my short stories and poems complain about this to me, but only for a short amount of time, but...what on earth is going on? Why would a fellow writer threaten my best friend?

Probably complain, or talk to the author if possible...but I think I am most definitely dreaming.

Author kills off a minor character you like?

Cry, and then complain.

Oh, I should have done this, but no one died, so there was no reason, but I assure you NEXT TIME I will.

If it adds to the plot then, it's fine, but you can't just kill off all the main characters in the first sentence or first chapter (if it is a novel) without a reason. Also, if it is a character I like and know well in the story, even minor, I would be upset. I'd probably talk to the person writing it, send a letter to them, perhaps, but character deaths can be sad for sure, and definitely worth crying over.

(Aside:

I think....the author did something to him

Me too)

Complain to the author, and demand they bring the minor character back to life!

Author gives you a love interest, but doesn't let you kiss them for the entire story?

It would be improper to kiss them, if we aren't married or engaged. But all the same, that is just unfair.

Ummm...I should probably add I am not old enough to start courting yet.

Love stories? Oh great, not love stories...kissing scenes can be so...disgusting.

That....would be awful for that character...

Author then gives you love interest but kills them off?

I do hope that never happens to me.

I'm still too young to court!

Tragic ending? Interesting... if both love interests die, well, that is the end to the love story. So yay!

(Aside:

Something is most definitely wrong with Phoenix...

Perhaps he was brainwashed.)

Oh, that would be awful for them...the character that is, the one who died.

Author decides to kill everyone off?

Alright, I just want to say that I do not want to know what the character after life is like. Particularly because I still want to have a happy ending to look forward to, that does not end in death.

I agree with Horatio, and really author, why does death have to be the end of the story?

Umm...if every character dies in the first chapter, without reason, it isn't really...um...well done, there has to be a reason for them to die.

First of all, that's awful, how could an author do such a horrible thing to their beloved characters!?

Are you happy about Adventure Await's Blogiversary?

Let me see, I suppose I am, since I wouldn't really be around in a way, if it weren't for the blog. Since I am around, the author can...do stuff to me in my story, but at least the post about the novel I am in got in "popular posts" on the sidebar.

Same...though I admit I should have talked to the author before my story ended. Well, guess I will have to bother her while she is going through editing.

Beg your pardon, but what on earth is this Adventure Awaits? And what is a "blogiversary"?

I admit, I agree with Tess and Horatio.

So, fellow characters, I hope you get to see how other characters have been treated by their author from this post...and how one of them seems to be very ignorant of the fact that there is an author. So for now, our magical connection is a tiny bit unstable, but...here are some "conversational questions" for the comments section.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is by far the worst thing your author has done to you?
And question from the real blog author: Would you like to see my characters make blog posts in the future?

Farewell!
-Horatio
-Tess
-Phoenix
-Lady Annabelle

P.S. (a note from (the real) blog author)

Character text colors:

Horatio's color is Light Blue

Phoenix's color is green

Tess's color is Purple

Lady Annabelle's color is Dark blue (Keep in mind that Annabelle is sort of unconscious at the moment, and lost her memory, so her answers may be different than usual.)

Why Choosing Actors and Actresses to "Play" Your Characters Helps You See Them Better

Hi  everyone.
Now, as it happens my characters don't always want to look like actors/actresses, but some do, and those who do tend to completely decide who they look like.

Why it helps

I have found this happening in one of my stories that I did not have a clear vision of what my character's face looked like. I knew what their hair and their entire body looked like except for their face. It was like they were turning away from me. (Which I may add they probably were.)

One of the characters that actually introduced me to choosing actors and actresses to play my characters was Lady Annabelle. It took her several books to finally decide what she looked like. And in one of them she decided she looked like Emma Watson. Here is a photo edit I made of her:
(original image from Rotten Tomatoes, https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/beauty_and_the_beast_2017#&gid=1&pid=h-136537 )
As you can see from this picture choosing an actress or actor to "play" your character does not change their hair color, or if they are human or an elf or whatever you had in mind for them.

Also with my main character Horatio it took me a long time to find an actor to "play" him,
until after rewatching a few episodes of the TV series Death in Paradise and watching the movie adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (2004), where the actor Kris Marshall plays both Gratiano and Humphrey Goodman. He caught my eye as being like Horatio. (Horatio had more control of what he looked like than I did.)

(Image from Rotten Tomatoes, https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/death_in_paradise?#&gid=1&pid=t-270000)

After Horatio suddenly decided that he looked like that it actually influenced the way I drew him.

A Older drawing of Horatio:                   And a newer one:

As you can see from my drawings, Horatio got quite developed because of choosing an actor.

How it helps with writing
Sometimes I have found that when I am (pretending) to talk to a character that my voice is the one responding to me, not my character's. (This mostly happens if the conversation is taking place in my head.) But if it is my voice responding to me instead of the character's voice then it can be kind of annoying. It's like I am talking to myself and not my character. Now this is where choosing actors/actresses to "Play" your characters comes in handy. If of course you decide to choose the actor or actress because of their acting and not because they look like how you imagine your character. (Though it is important to choose an actor or actress that looks like your character even if only in the face.)
If you have seen the actor or actress act before even if it is only once or even just in a trailer it can help you to understand what your character's voice sounds like. (Even if you decide to slightly modify the actor or actress's voice to go along with your character.)
But if you haven't I recommend at leaast watching a movie or TV show that they are in, but if you don't have the time for either then just watch a trailer from a movie they are in.

How this could help with writing screenplays
I've never really written a screenplay or script before, even though I do want to. But let's say you are a writer for a movie, TV show, etc. And you have a famous actor or actress who was asked to play the main character in the movie or TV show. As you write the script (if it wasn't already written) you probably would imagine the actor or actress playing the character. So before you get into writing screenplays for plays or movies or TV shows, these recommendations might be good to do in the meantime.

Do you choose actors and actresses to "play" your characters? If so then which ones?

My Camp NaNoWrimo Novel April 2018: The Mystery of The Body Thief

Hi everyone,
I hope you are having an awesome April... I have some exciting news! I finished my Camp NaNoWrimo word count goal! :)  (However, I am still working on my novel.)

Synopsis

Horatio wakes up from being in a coma, but he doesn't remember anything that happened before he fell into unconsciousness. All that he remembers is a name, "Annabelle!"

Also... Detective Inspector Time finds himself having to solve a case without Lady Annabelle.
Murders have been happening throughout many different kingdoms, and no one knows who exactly is behind it all.

Characters

In this novel there are quite a few characters. I won't list all of them, I'll just mention the main characters.

Horatio- A servant boy who woke up from a coma, he doesn't remember anything except a name "Annabelle."

Lady Annabelle- She and Horatio fell into a coma at the same time, except unlike him she hasn't woken up.

Detective Inspector Time- An elvish detective, who is trying to figure out who could be behind the recent murders of royalty.

Phillip- The Captain of the Guards, who is a dwarf.

Veronica- Annabelle's Lady in Waiting, who is a fairy.

Marigold- Time's adopted daughter, who is working with her father on the case.

Ophelia- The castle nurse, though she is a nurse she dislikes blood, and well anything medical.
Some people in the castle wonder why she became a nurse in the first place.

Austen- The new coroner, who is also helping Time solve the case.

Excerpt

He opened his eyes, his head felt incredibly dizzy and memories flashed in front of him for no  particular reason, and voices calling a name:
Annabelle, Annabelle!”
the name felt like it had a meaning for some reason but he could not place it. Suddenly he felt a hand on his wrist.
“Sir” said a stern voice, that sounded as deep as a bass. “You suffered from severe trauma to the head and were in a coma for 24 hours.”
