Getting Characters onto Paper (part 1)

Hi everyone, so today I’m going to talk about characters.

sometimes it’s hard to get ideas, for characters. So sometimes , I have trouble deciding who they should be. Backstory , personality traits things like that.
sometimes it’s good to take a brake for a little. and walk away from your note-pad or Computer screen.
Listen to Music, Read a book , go for a walk, draw etc. . then after you feel settled and are relaxed and not stressed go back to your note-pad or computer. And write down your ideas for your character. A character sheet can be useful, it can be easy to collect your thoughts that way.

giving your characters Names

sometimes , you have a great character but they don’t have a name. don’t worry names don’t always come right away, sometimes they take awhile to come.
But if your looking for good names, sometimes going to random name generator or a baby name website can be helpful. Also bringing a note-book with you wherever you go can be helpful, if you see any interesting names then write them down. Then you can look through your note-book , and find the name that clicks into place with your character.

Appearance

appearance is very important for the story. Does your character have freckles? A scar?
do they have bangs? what color are their eyes?

To get ideas bringing a note-book (as I said before) with you can be useful, write down things you see, without staring (people might take it the wrong way if you stare)

then search through your note-book again for ideas. (I learned this in a writing class) don’t describe hair with one single color because shades of many colors.
brown can have highlights of Blond or Red. Blond can have highlights of brown or other shades of blond.

eye color , for eye color. you can describe them in many ways. Sometimes I describe their eyes like this:

the sea after the storm ( dark blue)

they where as brown as tree bark (Brown)

pine-needle green (dark green)

black eyed (either dark brown or dark blue. phrase used in The Highwayman

and many more.

Personality Traits and quirks

Making your character realistic can be hard sometimes.

sometimes I make a character unrealistically perfect.

If your character is overly perfect the reader is less likely to like them…

here are some personality traits

loyalty

courages

Shyness

edgy

talkative

smart

thoughtful

stubborn

proud

selfless

kind

crazy

clumsy

quirks

has a unusual fear

is clumsy

has a unusual obsession with something

does a movement with their hands while talking

Backstory

Backstories are important for characters, it makes them who they are…

how did they end up going on this adventure? what made them what they want to become?

here are some back story ideas:

They lost someone they loved

They where betrayed

They come from a normal family but have a past that they are unaware of.

They lost their memory

and more...

I hope this was helpful, I will be posting part 2 soon...

The Lady of Winter (short story)

Heres a short story I wrote it's called the lady of winter , I thought I would share it with you since it's only  3  more days till December, Can't wait! This is character development story , not the official story about Celetir , Enjoy!:

the floors were made out of ice and had curved beautiful shapes of figures like wolves and fairies and other creatures, and icicles  hung on the ceiling. “I’m glad you came” said a voice, a lady with long blond hair and a long blue dress came she had wings sprouted from her back they looked almost as if they were made out of ice…”My lady” said Celtiere, bowed and kissed her hand , it was as cold as the floor it-self. “if evil continues to spread then our world will soon be destroyed” said Winter…moving across the ice floor…everything about winter was frozen and cold , her whole palace was frozen, Celtiere didn’t know how he would survive it. he hoped that his kingdom’s guardian the phoenix would keep him warm….”But…” said Winter. “We have hope” she said. and a door opened , and a chamber opened, “Fellow me, master Celtiere” she said, her light blue eyes twilighted like ice. Celtiere fellowed behind , the chamber was bitter cold…Celtiere couldn’t even feel his feet anymore, while winter seemed untouched…”I’m surprised that a elf, would come here” she said. “You were the only person who would listen to me” said Celtiere. “Aye..good thing you didn’t go to summer or you would burn to death” said Winter. “Well..freezing is better” mumbled Celtiere…”Did you say something?” asked Winter. “No my lady”. Winter nodded, then opened a door…”Don’t touch anything” said Winter. she walked inside with Celtiere fellowing behind… jewels glimmered on the ceiling , and blue fire spouted out of the floor as they walked…”It’s not normal fire..it won’t keep you warm” said Winter. “It will give you a very cold death” she said. Celtiere nodded he wasn’t sure what to say, they continued walking, then came to a small room, on a pedestal sat a blue-jewel, which winter picked up and handed to Celtiere. “This jewel, has the powers of a cold winter day, and can blind your enemies if you need it too, keep it safe…” she said.

what do you think Celtiere will do with the ice crystal?

are you excited for winter?

So far I have 5,294 words I need to get to 15,000.

I have been writing a lot recently (and annoying my characters) , but don't worry I still will be posting, if I can.

mostly I have been writing and writing, and more writing.

I have many words on my word count right now, and am very excited to finish my novel.

-----

for reading I'm reading Inkheart by cornelia funke it's very good so far. the story is very interesting and complex. The characters are very interesting and have very interesting characteristics. I also love that the characters talk about books.

------

I have been drawing and plotting out characters whenever I have the time.

Here is actually one of my designs of the villain (who currently has no name)

and here is a close up of her face. She was fun to draw.

That's all for now,
