Getting into Your Character's Backstory

Hi everyone,
Sometimes getting into a character's backstory can be tricky. Sometimes you know the character's backstory well and other times you have no idea what their backstory is like...

Review the facts you know about the character
This can be quite helpful, especially if you made a character bio (with information like name, age etc.). Do they have any relatives? If so, are their relatives still alive or are they deceased? Are they the last living relative or person in the family?  Do they have any siblings? And, if they do, do they know about them or are they really close to their sibling?

After you review the facts here are some things that may be helpful to write down...

What is your character doing?

Before they got to where they are (in the current story) what location were they in?

How old were they? (The age may remain the same depending on how far apart the backstory is from the current story.)

Did they have any bad habits that they got rid of before the current story? (Such as biting their nails, etc.)

Did they have a past job?

I recommend (if you feel comfortable doing this) being in a quiet room, and asking your characters the questions out loud. Basically you will be talking back and forth to yourself (pretending to be your character).

Seeing the backstory
Knowing what the back story is, is good, but seeing it is even better.
What I mean by seeing the backstory, is being able to experience or see the character's back story.

That is why either drawing a scene from your character's backstory:
This is a drawing of Celtiere

or making a character collage (which I have done before both in The Character Karaoke Tag, and Getting Characters onto Paper (part 2) ) is helpful to get a clear idea of the scene.
This time when creating a character collage you are
using images to create a vidid idea of a scene (instead of portraying a character's personality):
(original images from,
Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapestry#/media/File:The_Hunt_of_the_Unicorn_Tapestry_1.jpg,
wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael#/media/File:Raphael_colonna_01.jpg,
Wiki Commons , https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Crowns#/media/File:St._Johann_Johannes_B%C3%BCste_Krone.jpg,
wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle#/media/File:Bodiam-castle-10My8-1197.jpg,
wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland#/media/File:Glendalough.jpg,
wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_(mythology)#/media/File:Phoenix-Fabelwesen.jpg )
This collage shows some details from Celtiere's childhood, such as his pet phoenix, Fire, and his home, the castle, and the countryside of Ireland (where his story takes place).

Getting to know the other people from the past
This means getting to know the people who your character could have known from their past.
They must have met someone (unless of course they were locked away somewhere, far from buildings, and civilization).
It could be a  friend from the past who betrayed them, or it could even be their arch nemesis, or even a trustworthy friend who stayed with them (it doesn't always have to be betrayal) and is now a character in the current story.

Here is a form for your character (if you are having trouble thinking about what they are like).

Name:

Age:

Interaction with the main character:

Powers (if any):

Friend of foe?:

Rank in society:

Personality Traits:

Physical traits:

After you fill out the form (assuming you want to), I would recommend doing the same things you did with your main characters, such as talking to them or even walking like them. Even if they are minor character you should know what they are like because if you didn't you wouldn't know how they would react in a certain situation in your story.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you enjoyed reading the post and I hope this was helpful to you.

Do you have any other tips or ideas that help you get into your character's backstory?

Also do you like my ideas and tips?

Quinley

Introducing Some Characters: Villains

                                    Hi everyone...
I thought today was a good day
to introduce you to some of my villain characters....

                                            Here they are:

                                 Odile

Odile is a sorceress who can make
it appear that she is somewhere where she isn't...
She also has many other powers, including mind control.

Former Agent Smith

Former spy partner of Eric Hunt
she worked in the same agency that Eric did...
but really she worked for another agency.
One day though she betrayed the agency and
hasn't been heard of since...

                                                             Vinerva

She is a forest sprite (aka dryad),
who has very powerful nature magic
compared to most dryads...
but instead of using it for good she used it for evil...

-------------------------------------
Hope you enjoyed reading about my villains.

Which character is your favorite?

Quinley

The character Karaoke tag// A thousand Years

I was tagged by Anna at A world through her heart...Thank you Anna!:)

Of course since this tag has to do with Music. I was super excited to write this post (since I have theme songs for all of my characters) and since one of the questions was
What song would play at your character's wedding?
I figured I should do one of my stories (note: this story is still being plotted out): A thousand Years
This story is a prequel to Tess Short. and it was inspired by Jane Austen and J.R.R Tolkien...

Also sorry for the weird format...Blogger had some issues with the captions and HTML, and at times I had to fix it.

It's Your Character's wedding day what song plays during their first dance?

The first song that is Likely to play at Mr. Short's and Princess Gletta's wedding is

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

Or you can watch it on youtube here

and the song happens to also be the main theme song of the story...

                            What song(s) describe your protagonist(s)?
There are a few main protagonists in the story...
but I am only going to choose three out of the group

                                                       Princess Gletta
(Original pictures from,
https://www.pinterest.com/explore/viking-hair/?lp=true
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest#/media/File:Adirondacks_in_May_2008.jpg
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/435301120212356460/)

Princess Gletta is brave, strong, and very independent...

though she will have to decide between love and becoming the queen.
In my mind she is like a Jane Austen Heroine,
though I am going to read  more Jane Austen before I write the story...

                                                          These songs describes her personality:

                                            Touch The Sky From Brave

Or you can watch it on youtube here
The reason why I chose this song is
that Gletta is a ranger much like Merida.

A thousand years (Part 2) By Christina Perri (Feat.Steve Kazee)

Or you can watch it on youtube here

I can Imagine this as a song both Mr. Short and Gletta would sing...
though the first two lyrics go with Gletta more...

                                                                   Mr. Short

                  ( original Pictures from http://hero.wikia.com/wiki/Bilbo_Baggins
                       https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bag_End_door.jpg
                       https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Forest#/media/File:Smoky_forest.jpg)

Mr. Short thinks of himself as a "normal" hobbit (at least most of the time),
though he does have a brave and adventurous side which comes out during the quest...
He also is a very good story teller... (And probably will narrate the story along with Tirfendiel, and Gletta)

and I thought these songs did a good job of describing it:
Something Wild By Lindsey Stirling Ft.Andrew Mc.Mahon

Or you can watch it on YouTube here

You'll Be in my heart By Phill Collins

or you can watch it on YouTube here
Though this song reminded me of Mr.short's love for Gletta.

                                                   Prince Tirfindiel

 (original Images from https://www.pinterest.com/pin/305048574732080077/

                    https://www.pinterest.com/pin/384917099388887333/      )

Second in line to the throne of the woodland kingdom...
Though he is not the evil second in line to the throne who plans to overthrow                                       the first in line... No he is quite the opposite.
He actually does not want to be a king at all and would prefer to remain a                                            prince... and never have to think of the idea of ruling a kingdom.
-he has a sword that glows green, which he carries with him at all times.

He also is probably the character with the most bad luck...
He tries to be perfect most of the time...and well ,fails.

Tirfindiel isn't really one for singing he likes background music instead of a                                      song to sing to. Though I can Imagine him humming:

Assassin's Creed III by Lindsey Stirling

Or you can watch it on youtube here

                                     and maybe even....

                                          The sacrifice of Faramir
(Feat. Billy Boyd preforming "The Edge of Night")

Or you can watch it on youtube here
Though he would most likely sing this song silently to himself...
                                    and not out loud.

Any Instrument players or characters with Ties to music?

 (Pictures from
                     https://www.pinterest.com/explore/crystal-ball/?lp=true

         and a screenshot from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GiIPY57TKY )

Well...The Oracle (who is a recurring character in the series) sings her fortunes to people...
Mr.short and Gletta might sing in the story. The Oracle is more of a musician then the other characters:
Metroid Prime credits Vocal Version by Erutan
Or you can watch it on youtube here
This song performed by Erutan, describes The Oracle well, both in her love of music and in her powers of future-seeing.

Go to Songs, for Battle, Romance or Intense scenes?

Hmm...well I doubt anyone would be singing in battle (because my story would become a musical instead of a Fantasy adventure story). But background music for battle scenes would be interesting.
Anyway, here is the song that I think would go well with the end battle scene:

The Call by Regina Spektor

Or you can watch it on youtube here
Though this song would probably show up at the very end of the book...when they defeat the Villain (I have no idea who that is yet.)

                                                      I Tag:

Jane Maree// Maiden of the Misty Mountains

Gray Marie // Writing is life

                                                   Emma// Drawn to Writing

and anyone who wants to do it, you are welcome too!:)

                             --------------------------------------
That was fun to write and I feel like I know the characters better.

I am going to post the other tags soon...
it just happened that I was finished writing this one first...

Do you have any theme songs for your characters or your stories?
Which of the characters I mentioned was your favorite?

Happy father's day (special post for my dad)

Hi everyone, Happy Sunday...and it turns out today is Father's Day. I actually worked on several draft posts before deciding on what to write. Originally today I was going to do a review of a movie I had recently seen, but I decided since it was Father's Day I should write a post about how my dad helped inspire my writing.

The neat thing was my dad and I talked about story ideas in coffee shops, we talked about how the magic in a certain world in my stories worked, and how I plotted out my mystery novels...and who did it. and sometimes he would even inspire story ideas for my novels and short stories...

He also was the one who helped me find Blogger, helped me start a blog, and taught me how to use HTML and style sheets.

Thank you, Dad for inspiring me!

How is your Father's Day going? And has your dad ever helped you with writing or something else?

Getting Characters onto Paper (Part 2)

hello everyone, Last time I was talking about characters so I decided I should
 continue it.

                                                 Drawing your character

a drawing I did of one of my characters

sometimes it's hard to imagine what your character looks like ,

it helps to draw them, it doesn't matter if your an artist or not, it just helps to see what your characters look like.

if you don't feel comfortable drawing then you can make a character collage ,

a character collage is when you find images that go along with your character , and make a collage out of them. it's a way to show what your character is like without using words...

here is a example of a collage I made of Silena from Tess Short:

(original pictures  from http://thedesignleaf.com/
https://uk.pinterest.com/carriangel/emily-soto/
http://weknowyourdreams.com/tree.html
http://drawntowriting.blogspot.com/2016/05/creating-worlds-writing-camp-project_56.html)

Getting to know your character

One of the most important things is knowing your character, knowing what they would do in situations, or even how they walk or talk.

Walking like your character
for this one it requires that you stand up from your computer keyboard or from your writing note-book, and take a walk outside or somewhere that is a wide open space.
start by taking a simple walk around the room. after going the first time around start taking actions of how your character might walk , do they look behind their shoulder? do they skip along as they walk or do they trudge their feet on the ground?  do they lift their head as they walk or do they look down to the ground? once you have done this a couple times you can take notes and add it to your character sheet.

Talking like your character

this one helps with dialogue in your stories, you can ask a Family member or friend for help with this. (since it requires two people.) you both sit at a table one of you is the character and the other one asks questions. First start talking normally and you can introduce yourself as your character , then your family member or friend can start asking you how are you? and stuff like that.
if you are having trouble starting the conversation and getting into character here are some things you start by saying:

1. "Greetings I'm ___ nice to meet you"

2. "what brings you here?"

3. or just a simple "Hi"

as your talking just like in the character walk start acting like your character , do movement with your hands or look behind you now and then, or do whatever you think your character would do...

Dress up as your character

This one optional  but it's fun anyway and you can get the feeling of what it's like to be your character, and step into their shoes and have fun with it.

-------------------

hope you liked it , and I would love hear if you have done any of my ideas or are planning to.

Getting Characters onto Paper (part 1)

Hi everyone, so today I’m going to talk about characters.

sometimes it’s hard to get ideas, for characters. So sometimes , I have trouble deciding who they should be. Backstory , personality traits things like that.
sometimes it’s good to take a brake for a little. and walk away from your note-pad or Computer screen.
Listen to Music, Read a book , go for a walk, draw etc. . then after you feel settled and are relaxed and not stressed go back to your note-pad or computer. And write down your ideas for your character. A character sheet can be useful, it can be easy to collect your thoughts that way.

giving your characters Names

sometimes , you have a great character but they don’t have a name. don’t worry names don’t always come right away, sometimes they take awhile to come.
But if your looking for good names, sometimes going to random name generator or a baby name website can be helpful. Also bringing a note-book with you wherever you go can be helpful, if you see any interesting names then write them down. Then you can look through your note-book , and find the name that clicks into place with your character.

Appearance

appearance is very important for the story. Does your character have freckles? A scar?
do they have bangs? what color are their eyes?

To get ideas bringing a note-book (as I said before) with you can be useful, write down things you see, without staring (people might take it the wrong way if you stare)

then search through your note-book again for ideas. (I learned this in a writing class) don’t describe hair with one single color because shades of many colors.
brown can have highlights of Blond or Red. Blond can have highlights of brown or other shades of blond.

eye color , for eye color. you can describe them in many ways. Sometimes I describe their eyes like this:

the sea after the storm ( dark blue)

they where as brown as tree bark (Brown)

pine-needle green (dark green)

black eyed (either dark brown or dark blue. phrase used in The Highwayman

and many more.

Personality Traits and quirks

Making your character realistic can be hard sometimes.

sometimes I make a character unrealistically perfect.

If your character is overly perfect the reader is less likely to like them…

here are some personality traits

loyalty

courages

Shyness

edgy

talkative

smart

thoughtful

stubborn

proud

selfless

kind

crazy

clumsy

quirks

has a unusual fear

is clumsy

has a unusual obsession with something

does a movement with their hands while talking

Backstory

Backstories are important for characters, it makes them who they are…

how did they end up going on this adventure? what made them what they want to become?

here are some back story ideas:

They lost someone they loved

They where betrayed

They come from a normal family but have a past that they are unaware of.

They lost their memory

and more...

-------------------------

I hope this was helpful, I will be posting part 2 soon...
